How do I help my child stop guessing at words?

Reading is a complex process that we learn to do. Think back to how you learned to read. What is easy for you? Did you need additional support?

Some children just need more time and attention to figure out how sounds and letters work together to read words.

So what do you do as a parent, when it’s already 8 pm and your child keeps stumbling over words, and you’re starting to lose patience?

Watch this video to find out!

What to say when your child keeps guessing at words:

  • Wait till your child finishes reading a page and then go back to the word they missed (only pick one) and say:
“You did great! Let’s take a look back at this word, what word would have these letters and make sense in our story?”
  • If your child gets it, GREAT! Then have your child go back and reread the sentence.
  • If they don’t, then supply the correct word and keep on reading.
